“Family Driven Faith”

Family Driven FaithVoddie Baucham, pastor of Grace Family Baptist Church in Houston, has written an excellent book for Christian parents. The title is Family Driven Faith – Doing What It Takes To Raise Sons And Daughters Who Walk With God .

In Family Driven Faith, Christian mothers and fathers are encouraged to take seriously the biblical admonition that we have to rear our children in “the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”  (Ephesians 6:4)

As a Christian husband and father I know that I have the primary responsibility for the teaching and discipling of my children, as well leading my family in family worship. But it has oftentimes proven to be a difficult and frustrating thing to do. So, I have needed and sought after encouragement for this very important role and stewardship that God has given me. I have found it in Voddie Baucham’s book.

In the introduction, Voddie writes,

Our children are falling away (from the faith) because we are asking the church to do what God designed the family to accomplish. Discipleship and multi-generational faithfulness begins and ends in the home.

This book is an effort to put the ball back in the family’s court and to motivate, correct, encourage, and equip families to do what God commands concerning the next generation. The Bible is clear about what God expects out of the home and about how it is to be accomplished.”

Using the Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4-7, as the biblical text for the book, Dr. Baucham emphasizes the fact that the responsibility for the discipling and instruction of my children in the things of God is mine and that it is to be done primarily in the home. The ministry of the church, it’s youth pastor and youth ministry is valued and appreciated, but the responsibility is first and foremost mine.

Among the many aspects of parenting and the discipling of our children and youth that Baucham writes about in the book, the one that I was really blessed to read about was that of family worship. This is an area of our family’s life that I struggle with. Daily work schedules are long and busy; kids are in school all day and then they come home to homework, the practicing of their band instruments, and the desire for some free time. By the time supper is over (usually about 7pm) everyone is tired and it’s time to finish un-done school work and get ready for bed. Baucham has been there and he understands. He says, as with all things, the importance and value of family time together in the reading of the Word, prayer, and praise must be understood, prioritized, and committed to.

In Chapter 7, under the heading of “Where Do We Begin?”, Voddie outlines seven points about family altars:

  1. Family worship must be born of conviction
  2. Family worship begins with the head of the household
  3. Family worship must be scheduled
  4. Family worship must be simple
  5. Family worship must be natural
  6. Family worsip must mandatory
  7. Family worship must be participatory

Seven blessings that result from family worship are then discussed under the heading of “What Difference Will It Make?”. The blessings are:

  1. Family worship honors God
  2. Family worship will draw your family closer to God
  3. Family worship will draw your family closer to one another
  4. Family worship will lay a foundation for multigenerational faithfulness
  5. Family worship will expose weaknesses in your home
  6. Family worship serve as a training ground for smaller children
  7. Family worship will make corporate worship more meaningful

I also found Chapter 9 to be a very interesting and thought provoking chapter. It’s entitled, “The Coming Revival: Is The Church Ready For Family Driven Faith?”. Here Baucham talks about familiy-integrated and age-segregated churches. Be sure to wear your shoes when reading this chapter; your toes may get stepped on.

As a father of four who has been convicted by the Lord about the importance of my leadership in the home and my responsibilty for the rearing of my children in the “discipline and instruction of the Lord”, this has been a great book.

If the Lord is working in your heart in this area of your life and family as well, let me encourage you pick up and read Family Driven Faith. You’ll be blessed.
